Metro Nashville City Councilman Eric Crafton is resurrecting an effort to make English the official language of metro government. The Nashville Post finds it ironic that the petition in support of the amendment contains no less than twelve misuses of the English language.
Kay Brooks objects to the article in the Post, arguing that it distracts us from debating the merits of the actual proposal (she has the full text of the proposal on her website).
I actively campaigned against Kay Brooks during the last school board election. I strongly disagree with her on several important political, educational, and religious matters.
But she has a point. The Post's article makes Crafton and all those associated with the English only movement look like idiots and thus unworthy of serious engagement. It contributes to the narrative of the educated elite keeping a hoard of backward conservatives from doing anything stupid.
